WALASSE TING werd in 1929 te Shanghai in de Volksrepubliek China geboren.
Wijkt uit naar Frankrijk, waar hij in de vijftiger jaren te Parijs actief samenwerkt met Appel, Alechinsky en Jorn, stichtende leden van de COBRA-groep.
Vestigt zich in 1960 definitief in New York, maar houdt er in Amsterdam een studio-atelier op na, die hij deelt met Appel en Corneille, kunstenaars waarmee hij steeds een goede relatie onderhouden heeft.
Het oeuvre van Walasse TING is fleurig en kleurrijk. "De vrouw" staat bijna steeds centraal, omringd door veelkleurige papegaaien, vogels allerhande, gevlekte pony's en speelse of slapende katten. Zijn werk is haast "vrouwelijk" te noemen en straalt nu eens een merkwaardige tederheid uit en is dan weer sterk erotisch geladen. Met een subtiele penseel- of pennetrek accentueert hij de "onschuld" en de vertederende schoonheid van de (Aziatische) vrouw en verheft haar tot een droomfiguur, waar iedere man finaal voor valt.
Walasse Ting werkt vooral met acryl op rijstpapier omdat hij met deze materie het best zijn gevoelens en filosofisch ideeëngoed kan uiten.

Het geheel van zijn oeuvre is bijzonder poëtisch en zou eventueel kunnen relateren met dat van Gauguin, Foujita en de verfijndheid van de kunst van Marie Laurencin.
Het oeuvre van Walasse TING is in het bezit van 's werelds belangrijkste musea, als o.a. The Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan, Guggenheim (allen New York); Stedelijk Museum van Amsterdam, Centre Georges Pompidou (Parijs); Silkeborg Kunstmuseum (Kopenhagen), The Israël International Museum (Jeruzalem) en behoort tot de belangrijkste internationale kunstcollecties.

Born in Shanghai in 1929, Ting studied briefly at the Shanghai Art Academy before leaving China in 1946 to come to Hong Kong, where he exhibited a few watercolours at a local bookstore. In 1950 he sailed for France, eventually arriving in Paris without money, friends or lodging. He lived as a poor struggling artist for six years, absorbing the city and for the first time being exposed to Western art, especially the Expressionist movement and the works of Picasso. An important influence was the Belgian artist, Pierre Alechinsky, who discovered Ting sleeping on bare boards in a tiny attic room and became his lifelong friend.
Ting arrived in New York in 1958 at the height of the Abstract Expressionist period. He befriended the American artist, Sam Francis, and the movement had a profound influence on his work. Unlike in Paris, Ting could paint and sell his work. Bold dripping strokes featured in his paintings, which at that time were mainly poetic abstractions in the manner of the Paris-based Chinese artist, Zao Wouki. Only in the 1970s did Ting develop his now distinctive style using Chinese calligraphic brushstrokes to define outlines and filling flat areas of colour with vivid acrylic paint.
After more than 20 years in New York, Ting moved to Amsterdam, where he has a spacious studio. Although he broke away from his Chinese roots so long ago, he finds that the city's trees and canals remind him of Hangzhou's West Lake. He lived in both New York and Amsterdam, but like Gauguin, he also often visited Tahiti in search of the exotic colours that he loved.
